Thinking Big with Mrs. Zhou

By December 4, 2025No Comments3 min read

Mrs. Zhou, Second Grade Teacher, is the kind of teacher who makes every day feel like an adventure. Whether she’s turning math problems into friendly competitions or breaking into song at the most unexpected moments, she knows exactly how to spark curiosity and keep her students laughing.

In second grade, students begin to develop independence in school by taking on more responsibility for their learning and daily routines. They also work together to develop a class charter, which forms the basis for all their activities. This charter is an agreement that everyone in the classroom helps create so they can all feel happy, safe, and ready to learn every day.

“My favorite part of the school year is watching my students grow more confident—when something that was once tricky suddenly clicks, and they light up with pride because they figured it out,” comments Mrs. Zhou. “Each student comes with their own unique learning “fingerprint,” and discovering what helps them thrive is one of the most exciting parts of teaching. Those moments of “I get it now!” are pure magic and remind me why I love what I do.”

Mrs. Zhou joined St. Thomas’s in 2023. Her previous experience includes roles as a Kindergarten Teacher, First Grade Literacy and Social Studies Teacher, First Grade Head Teacher, and Special Education Assistant Teacher. Her dedication to young learners shines through not only in her extensive experience but also in her genuine passion for the work she does.

Throughout the year, second grade students engage in learning experiences that deepen their understanding of being part of a larger community. They explore the concept of community by studying the history of New Haven, discussing the roles and contributions of significant community members, and identifying the characteristics of a supportive and inclusive community.

“I hope my second graders carry with them a sense of confidence in their abilities, a willingness to ask questions and explore new ideas, and a heart that treats others with empathy. I also hope they begin to understand their own unique ways of learning and expressing themselves, because discovering who they are as learners is an important part of becoming who they are as people. Most of all, I hope they remember that school is a place where they felt supported, challenged, and happy.”

When asked why she chose to become a teacher, Mrs. Zhou gave an unexpectedly fitting answer. “My second-grade teacher Mrs. Lindstrom was the person who inspired me to become a teacher. She is a huge inspiration to me still today because of her kindness and the fun she brought into the classroom each day.”
