Thinking Big with our Parent Community Association

At St. Thomas’s, we know our school is at its very best when families feel connected, welcomed, and truly woven into the fabric of our community. The St. Thomas’s Parent Community Association exists to bring that spirit to life—and nowhere was that more evident than at last Friday’s Lower School Elves’ Workshop, one of our most cherished traditions and truly one of the most magical days of the year.

This festive event simply wouldn’t happen without the unwavering dedication of four extraordinary Parent Community Association volunteers. Thanks to them, students enjoyed a joyful shopping experience, with Grade 6 stepping into the role of “Santa’s elves” to help younger children choose thoughtful gifts for the people they love.

Our community believes that nothing is bigger than childhood and that belief shapes everything we do—from our intentionally small school environment to the close-knit, diverse community that surrounds and supports each child.

Rosalie Mutonji, one of the volunteers and a 5th and 6th grade parent, comments, “I love the nurturing environment at St. Thomas’s. What truly sets the school apart is the value-based education—kindness, respect, and strong character aren’t just taught, they’re lived every day.”

Through shared celebrations, like Elves’ Workshop, and moments of joy, students learn the importance of generosity, belonging, and caring for one another—values that stay with them long after the season ends. Mercedes Ellis, a volunteer and a 5th and 6th grade parent, adds, “I have always loved Elves’ Workshop and when I started as a cashier when Emerson was in Kindergarten, I would have never thought that I would now be part of this committee and get to see Emerson be an elf this year, while helping out. Its wonderful to be able to see that this beautiful tradition can be carried on.”

When asked why they volunteer, all four moms were quick to answer:

Shantel Garcia, 3rd grade parent: “Volunteering and giving our time feels like a natural way to give back to a community that gives so much to our children. It also deepens our connection to the people who make the school such a special place.”

Asha Wilburg, 4th grade parent: “I volunteer at St. Thomas’s to give back to a community that has meant so much to my family. Being part of a parent-run committee, and helping with events like Elves’ Workshop, allows me to contribute to the joy, connection, and sense of belonging that make this school so special. For me, donating my time is about showing up for our children, and helping to create a warm, nurturing environment where they can thrive.”

Rosalie Mutonji: “Volunteering allows me to give back to a school that is deeply invested in the success of our children. It also helps me model service and generosity to my children, characteristics I would like for them to continue long after they leave the classroom.”

Mercedes Ellis: “Being able to volunteer your time is extremely appreciated. There are many opportunities to help out and we all have some sort of gift “expertise”.  Who knows what change you can offer to make Elves’ Workshop even better.”

Thank you to our wonderful group of parent volunteers. Their generosity truly embodies the heart of St. Thomas’s, and we are deeply grateful. Together, we make St. Thomas’s the vibrant, welcoming place our children love. Happy Holidays.

P.S. Here’s a photo of the ‘inventory crew’ who conquered the inventory in just four hours on the weekend, to be prepared for next year.
