Thinking Big with our Physical Education Team

The Physical Education program at St. Thomas’s is rooted in our belief that educating the whole child is essential to a meaningful and well-rounded school experience. Students are introduced to a wide variety of sports and physical activities designed to develop both gross and fine motor skills, improve balance and agility, and strengthen overall fitness. Above all, our program is designed to be engaging and joyful.

Physical Education Co-Teacher, Mr. Anderson, comments, “As a child, the teachers who had the biggest impact on me were my PE teachers. They encouraged me to try new sports and activities that taught me skills I have carried with me throughout my life.”

One of the most anticipated events of the school year is Gym Night, held on April 30. Students in Grades 1–6 participate in a variety of energetic performances, including gymnastics routines, team games, and the always-popular (and proudly “competitive”) volleyball match featuring our Grade 6 students.

Gym Night is about much more than athletics—it’s a joyful celebration of our school community. It highlights teamwork, confidence, and sportsmanship, while bringing families together for an evening filled with school spirit and a little friendly competition.
Physical Education Co-Teacher, Ms. Williams comments, “My lifelong involvement in sports and staying active is what drew me to physical education. Those experiences not only provided me with a diverse set of skills, but also shaped who I am by teaching valuable life lessons and fostering personal growth. I hope students leave my class with the skills and knowledge to remain active throughout their lives, while also gaining confidence, building resilience, and developing a positive mindset.”

Mr. Anderson adds, “I hope students develop a genuine love for physical activity and the confidence to believe in what their bodies can do. I hope they learn resilience, teamwork, and respect for others, and that they leave my class with a positive relationship with exercise rather than seeing it as a chore.”

We hope to see everyone at Gym Night this year to help make it another memorable evening.
